With the beautiful Otter Creek river flowing through its center, Middlebury is a small town that is larger than life. Its early settlers included educators, inventors and businessmen who envisioned a grand place that would enrich the lives of its citizens. These luminaries were determined to make Middlebury a center for knowledge, fine art, architecture and commerce. And they succeeded. Today the old mill buildings are home to diverse businesses, academically renowned Middlebury College continues to attract students from around the world, and the arts remain an integral part of the community.

The Morgan horse is Vermont's state animal, and the state's first breed of horse. Its lineage is traced to "Figure," a stallion brought to Vermont in 1789 by Justin Morgan, a teacher from Randolph. Morgans were ridden to California during the Gold Rush and used by the Vermont Calvary and Confederate General Stonewall Jackson in the Civil War. They provided public transport in American cities. In the last decades of the 1800s, several Addison County farms were recognized for their Morgans. Among them was Joseph Battell's Bread Loaf Farm in Weybridge. Joseph Battell established this farm for breeding Morgan horses in the 1870s. Following a 1905 Act of Congress to establish a farm where the Morgan would be perpetuated, he deeded his property to the U.S. Government. The University of Vermont has owned the farm, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, since 1951. The time honored tradition of raising, training, and selling Morgans continues today.
